Chemex

In 1941, the chemist Dr. Peter Schlumbohm invented what was to become the iconic Chemex filter coffee range.

Unlike other chemists, he chose to combine functionality and beauty and this resulted in the characteristic hourglass shape that has defined the brand.

Furthermore, he saw the need for a double bonded paper filter to improve extraction characteristics.

Using borosilicate glass that is tough, he added a wooden collar and rawhide tie, to complete the beautification that led it to be displayed in The Museum of Modern Art. It was selected as one of the 100 best designed products of modern times by the Illinois Institute of Technology.
